After graduating from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Economics and spending a year working in Israel on the volunteer fellowship “Project Otzma”, Derek started work at EQE Engineering, Inc. in San Francisco, CA as an Accounting Clerk eventually being promoted all the way to a Senior Billing Specialist.
After leaving EQE and moving to Pittsburgh, he was employed at the accounting firm of Kline, Keppel & Koryak, P.C. where he started as a staff accountant and when he left he held the position of manager. At Kline, Keppel & Koryak, Mr. Smith specialized in preparing income tax returns, tax research and tax planning for corporations, partnerships, fiduciaries and individuals. While Mr. Smith was employed at Kline, Keppel & Koryak, he became licensed as a Certified Public Accountant.
After leaving Kline Keppel & Koryak in 1999, he worked as the controller of American Textile Company. At American Textile Company, Mr. Smith was responsible for shortening their month end close from 15 days to 3 days. He implemented a bar coded inventory system and helped increase company collections. He also was the company’s Custom Compliance Manager and worked on a number of software implementations through-out the company. At American Textile Company, Mr. Smith became skilled with working a large international corporation that in was still a “family business” at its core.
In 2003, Mr. Smith decided to return to public accounting and he started his own accounting firm, DJ Smith Accounting, P.C. He grew the firm from $0 revenues to over $300,000 in revenues with 2 employees. During the time at DJ Smith Accounting, PC, he focused himself on providing excellent service to small business owners and trying to be available to those owners almost 100% of the time. He combined his experiences at American Textile Company and Kline Keppel & Koryak to create a public accounting firm that was focused on helping small business owners receive the highest return from their businesses.
In 2012, DJ Smith Accounting, P.C. was merged into Markovitz Dugan & Associates. This merger allowed him to expand all the services he provides to include audits, business valuations, cost segregations studies and other accounting work.
Over the last 20 years, Mr. Smith has worked closely with business owners and individuals to provide to them the best possible service in the fields of tax and accounting.
